A little about counselling

You may be wondering if counselling is for you and who to have as your counsellor - well just relax, read a little and then if you wish, just make contact with me and we can talk about your thoughts, concerns or anything else you like.

‘It's never too late to turn your life around and its never too early to begin.’

There is so much that can happen in our lives that mean we feel misshaped, hung up, or just wrong inside. Counselling gives you a safe place for you to explore what is going on for you. It’s not very often that a person will sit and listen to you and what you think and feel for a period of time (without getting their ‘stuff’ involved, but that’s what good counsellor does - stay focused on you without it becoming about them).

We can look at anything you like from the past, to the now to the future. Together we can look at anything. We can look at what is up, what is down, what is healthy and what is not. There is nothing we can not explore. We can look at things as they really are and figure out what is really going on for you.

My hope is that together we can create a relationship that is caring, confidential and creative. A healing space within which you can talk about anything and everything that concerns you, without being judged or criticised. I will value you for the person you are, and offer supportive challenge to help you identify and work towards your goals.

Counselling can help you arrive at clear decisions and provide support when you most need it. It can give you the space and focus to see your true self and what you are doing and where you are going.

What does one expect in a session?

The past often comes up, and with it pain, anger, loss and challenge arise- this is very normal and okay. Counselling can help you deal with your life events in a fresh way and enrich life generally. We will go at a pace that is good for you and stay in constant awareness of your level of challenge.

"If you create a safe place for me to be real and be my total self, bad bits and all, and I can say anything I want without fear of judgement, then that is very healing for me."

At times counselling can get challenging as some things are so set in us that they don't want to budge without a little help and easing out. Times when it is challenging are often followed with an ‘ah-ha’ moment as we realise how things really are. With this new knowledge and self- empowerment you can be what you want to be and be real with yourself and others. In realisation and understanding we gain empowerment.

We create a safe place to explore your thoughts and feelings. Feelings that have been held inside can build up and become very tiring, hard to manage and intense. Some of these feelings might be: -
Anger, loss, anxiety, grief, embarrassment, change, sexuality and sexual issues to name but a few.

Getting in touch with our feelings is the beginning of healing. ‘Tears and anger are part of the healing, not part of the problem’. When we are met by a person who accepts us unconditionally and really walks beside us in our thoughts and feelings we can relax and make sense of ourselves. This can be hard with friends or family as they have agendas and want to tell you what is best for you according to them, or you may feel a burden, or they may have limited time, but with a counsellor we listen on multiple levels and put ourselves aside so we can get along side you and experience (empathise) with your feelings and experience. ‘When we are truly allowed to be ourselves we can find our true selves and be as we really are, or if we wish we can change’.

I use a caring and compassionate approach coupled with a wide experience of working with people. I empower the client to explore and understand their concerns and barriers to fulfilment, success and contentment. My approach focuses on you as an individual with your own unique experience of issues, problems and aspirations allowing you to explore these issues in a safe and confidential environment.

Testimonials from some of my clients

" I wasn’t sure I was right for counselling but I think everyone should have it as I found who I am and am beginning to live my life the way I want it."

“ I was scared at first and unsure of what I would say or how to start but as soon as I sat down it was okay. What I thought I would say didn’t come up until later and when it finally did I realised it wasn’t such as big an issue as I had made it in my head, over time”

“As a guy I didn’t tell anyone I was being counselled for ages. Over the course of time I found out that 6 of my male friends had had counselling for all sorts of things. Counselling has been the best thing I have done in my life. For the first time I know who I am, what I am and I can do what I want without the past holding my ankles still.”

“ I can’t believe how much counselling has helped me, my whole life is different. My husband and I now talk in a new way and when I tell my kids what I feel or need they really hear me. I really know how to express myself and MY needs now.”
